What is PAT Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is a reliable way of examining whether moveable electrical appliances are safe to use. Although most electrical safety defects can be determined visually, at Pennington’s electrical electrician Oxshott, we advise that a test is conducted to ensure maximum safety as some defects can only be identified once tested.
How Is a PAT Test Conducted with Electrician Oxshott?
Electrician Oxshott is aware most electrical appliances suffer wear and tear after being used for a while. PAT checks are conducted to ensure that even after this time period, they’re safe to use. Electrician Oxshott search for loose parts, damaged covers, visible wires, signs of overheating, damage caused by storage in a damp environment as well as a build up of dust, which can be a fire hazard. What Kind of Items Should Be PAT Tested?
Electrician Oxshott tests a plethora of household appliances that can be unplugged and moved. Our experienced team of electrician Oxshott understand good service and reliability, thus catering to all your electrical needs.
Examples of appliances our electrician Oxshott PAT include: kettles, lamps, refrigerators, monitors, printers, etc. Cordless appliances do not need to be PAT tested but their battery chargers that plug into the wall do need to be tested. Additionally, new appliances do not need to be PAT tested. However, a visual inspection is recommended by electrician Oxshott to ensure the item is not damaged.
How Often Do Portable Appliances Need Testing?
Electrician Oxshott advise that PAT needs to be done every 2 years but ideally more frequently such as every 12 months. This is dependent on the type of appliance and the environment in which it is used. For example, a drill in a high-risk environment such as a construction site would need to be tested more frequently than a kettle in a low-risk environment such as an apartment.
It’s good practice for landlords to arrange PAT tests at the same time as the EICR is undertaken for each new tenancy. Testing needs to be done frequently by electrician Oxshott because of the increased risk of damage as time goes by.
What happens after a PAT?
When the testing by our skilled electrician Oxshott is complete, you receive a report including inventory, test results for each appliance and an explanation of why any items may have failed the test. Each tested appliance will have a label with the test date, the electrician Oxshott inspector’s signature and the date of the next test.
Keeping a record of the test results can be useful in terms of managing your appliances whilst reviewing the effectiveness of these portable appliances.
